Rule of Thirds: Photography Composition How-To

Leave a Comment / Photography Tutorial / MeganCieloha

The Rule of Thirds is one of the most used compositional approaches in photography. According to MoMA.org, composition is: The arrangement of the individual elements within a work of art so as to form a unified whole; also used to refer to a work of art, music, or literature, or its structure or organization. Everyday Photos on 35mm Film

Leave a Comment / Film Photography / MeganCieloha

I want to shoot enough film in 2017 that I feel as comfortable with film as I do with digital. That is going to require some purposeful shooting. However, I do think that the scarcity of film, the need to make every frame count, speeds up the process a little bit. As think very carefully

Tulips

Photographing pale pastel flowers is a sure fire pick-me-up for my mood. Especially when the blooms are shades of pink, green and white. These were $5 at Trader Joes. Completely worth the investment, in my opinion. Pin It

Family on Film

I brought along my 35mm film camera for the session that I shot of Bethany’s family, last month. For me, film is imperfect, still, but so easy to connect with emotionally. Nikon F100 | Portra 400 Pin It

5 Minutes on a Snowy Afternoon

Leave a Comment / Digital Photography / MeganCieloha

Still waiting on that highly anticipated ‘big snow’ here in Virginia. We did have a little unexpected flurry in the late afternoon, recently, which had everyone pretty excited, including this little guy who couldn’t get enough of watching the white flakes from the window. *Tip: You need to be focused quite close up in order

January is the perfect time of year for a girls’ weekend. Georgetown is an awesome location. Food, coffee, cocktails, shopping and laughter. Followed by a little bit of work. But, not too much ;) Pin It

Portraits on Film

It can be hard to figure out what to shoot to make it through a whole roll of film, sometimes. It feels like each frame has to really mean something. So, last time I had a roll to finish I forced myself to be creative with portraits of two of the boys. Nikon F100 |

Coffee Talk

Somehow, helping to make coffee has become a coveted activity in this household. The two younger boys compete for the honor when they are able. If I skip a step in the process, or attempt to modify my normal order, I’m met with stiff resistance. They know how it should be done. Pin It

Family | 2 hrs in the Mid Morning.

11 Comments / Digital Photography / MeganCieloha

I photograph my family. Our daily life, our travels and our occasional portrait sessions. Most of the time, I love the freedom of that. I can shoot what I want, when I want, without feeling obligation to capture other people’s visions or stick to external timelines for production. Sometimes, though, I find myself feeling antsy.

9.3 | A Portrait Session

I needed to shoot some example images for a tutorial I wrote for Clickinmoms, and this guy was my willing model. He even happily went coat-less in mid-40 degree weather. As we enter into the tween stage of life, we’ve had a lot of fun as his humor and insights have really grown. Pin It

Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s historic district is quite compact and perfect for walking around with kids. Within several blocks we were able to visit Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, The Betsy Ross House, Benjamin Franklin’s grave, Elfreth’s Alley and had a fantastic lunch at High Street Market. The walk to City Hall and Reading Terminal was a bit

I still am not over the feeling of awe that arises when we “stand where Washington stood.” Or Hamilton. Or Lincoln. Or…. Day in DC

2 Comments / Travel Photography / MeganCieloha

The day after Thanksgiving, we decided to head into the city for a day of museums, instead of shopping. Judging by the business of the Natural History Museum, many other people had the same idea. Harpers Ferry | Travel on Film

Leave a Comment / Film Photography, Travel Photography / MeganCieloha

Over Labor Day weekend we went camping as a family (dogs and all!) near Harpers Ferry. Honestly, I had also been quite underwhelmed with my film
