After a quick stay in St. Thomas, we hopped on a ferry to Road Town on the British island of Tortola to pick up our chartered sailboat. Once we got out of the harbor, where there had been no breeze and plenty of hot sun, vacation REALLY started. I wasn’t sure what to expect while sailing the British Virgin Islands on a self-piloted boat. 5 days of bobbing around in the ocean? Lots of near miss collisions? Boat malfunctions? Luckily, none of my worries were founded as we had fantastic weather, traveled during low season which several times allowed us to have a beach or snorkeling spot largely to ourselves and The Moorings had sent us out with a generally very well equipped boat. It didn’t hurt that both of the husbands (our captains) are heavy airplane pilots with hundreds of hours running a crew. They ran a tight ship, most of the time ;) If you’ve ever considered a sailing vacation in the BVIs, I am telling you to schedule one! Take a basic sailing course if you don’t have sailing experience and get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
